When the new school meets the old school, the following mashup is what you get. If listening to both artists for the first time, you might believe Daft Punk’s rhythm/beat is the new school and Bat for Lashes synth-heavy music is the old school (but this is not the case.) If you found this blog, you probably already know about Daft Punk. As for Bat for Lashes (AKA Natasha Khan), she is what seems to be the evolution of new wave on another planet. As you already know, Michael Jackson died today and it seemed fitting to release this mashup. I’ve been holding onto this song for quite a while. It was the first mashup I’ve ever attempted and I believe the mashup represented the very emotions I felt at the time. As for the youngest artist in this mashup trio (Crystal Castles), I fell deeply in love with their debut album and they definitely deserve your attention.

I would first like to say that I regret not going to the Grizzly Bear concert which was down the block from where I live. That being said, I greatly admire this band and their approach to music. I fell in love with this song shortly before I seen the video. There was something about the piano that sounded too familiar and instantly I heard Dr. Dre’s “Still D.R.E.” after playing around with the two songs for a while, I came up with this…..

UPDATE: I was wrong, the show is this weekend and I still dont have tickets.

I would like to preface this with a little bit of background about why I started this mash up thing. I grew up on the South Side of Chicago. At the time, Rap hadn’t really developed its own identity in Chicago. But where Rappers struggled, DJs did more than pick up the slack and had been doing so for a long time. Hip-Hop DJs weren’t the only DJs out there, despite what mainstream media portrayed. House and other dance genres played a big role in developing my musical taste.

As a kid growing up in Chicago, I spent a decent amount of time going to mix tape shops and trying to record DJ sets from the radio. At that time, that was the closest I could get to DJing. As you may know, turntables are not a cheap investment and they were definitely out of my reach. Even today, a worthwhile DJ setup will cost you more than $1000. That being said, I recently turned to computers as an alternative way to ‘DJ’ music. It is NOT the traditional form of DJing and I have great respect for those with tradition DJing experience and talent (see Scratch.)

More recently, I have been listening to the likes of Girl Talk and The Hood Internet. Girl Talk’s Night Ripper album threw me for a loop and changed the way I listened to music. The Hood Internet first captivated me with their mashup of T.I. Vs Fujiya & Miyagi.

Ok, now that I killed any buzz you may have had… here is my first release:

Metronomy Vs. Lupe Fiasco – I Told You
